kinect connect

We bought two kinect-cameras and are experimenting. The kinect camera tracks your body position in three dimensions and allows you to use your body-position as controller for all kinds of software.
We found a very nice software solution for using the kinect with ableton live by an american guy called Ryan Challinor. It's incredibly easy to use and pretty versatile. After a couple of minutes we had the first instruments ready to play by waving our hands in the air and Carsten recorded this video of myself having fun with it:

This was only the very beginning. We are now preparing a setup that allows to remix our music by dancing. Expect more videos soon....

Our concert at the closing night of the LEM-festival was great. Lots of people dancing in the audience (and on stage). As we had only about 45 minutes to play we compressed all the stuff that went well during the last concerts into a non-stop-show. Intense, intense. After the show we danced a lot to DJ Gonzo's set. Must have been a couple of years ago that I have been dancing to Can's "Mother Sky", my god, what a great track for freaking out. I also was impressed by the concerto of Cargo, two guitars, lots of pedals and little samplers, doing a droney, spaced out improvisation set.

this was a nice concert, we played for the farewell of our friend Jovan, who went away to germany as so many oter friends, during this time of depression, repression, crisis and mutlosigkeit. Anywaty, it was so hot inside the building that most people were standing outside, in front of the door. so we decided to play in the door. so people don't have to come inside for the concert. and we had a sofa. and we had good times. see it yourself.

Whow.

Wonderful concert in an abandoned hospital in the centre of Sant Feliu de Guixols. The decoration they had come up with was all the x-mas-decoration from town stuffed together!! Best sound since a long time, the sound guy had some custom made subwoofers that made yummy bass (that's the company: www.nouso.net) . Hooray. The white whine was excellent, thank you, Luz, for bringing me another bottle to the stage! The party afterwards was wild. Breakfast was yummy again (tostadas with tahima and honey). Then we got invited for an exclusive visit of an exhibition of sound installations by Luthiers Drapaires. Excellent stuff, we especially love the Maquina de Amor that has been at several festivals where we played lately.:

Then to finish our visit we had a nice swim at this beach, just around the corner. And excellent lunch on a parking lot in the harbour. Thanks a million to Stefan and Barbora for driving us!

Here is a little set for Ableton Live that uses the new max4live devices to generate a monotonous but everchanging ambient-tune. It uses only one sample from a kickdrum to make sounds of clicks, bass, pads and a theremin. You need the latest version of ableton live and max4live to open it.

We play on the World Water Day. Friends of us started the spanish section of "Viva Con Agua", a NGO that works for worldwide free access to drinking water. The party they made in the Raval located Freedonia was a blast. After us there was a Rumba-band and a tapdance-hip-hop-freestyle session going on.

Barcelona based musician Paul Rose presents a selection of tracks from works he did for theatre plays, choreographies and installations. In 2007 he collaborated in the first of an ongoing series of plays with set-designer Maria Pons and director Beatriz Liebe. "Agnus Lupus" was a play, but also an instalation that the audience was invited to visit after seeing the performance (Instituto del teatro, Barcelona, 2007). For "Mon Amour" was a play based on M. Dumas' "Hiroshima Mon Amour". The stage set was based on 5 isles that during the days after the performance worked as automated installations, with music, sound, light and robotics involved (Strobe-festival, Amposta, Spain, 2008). The third play/installation that Paul worked on was called "Palabres Alaudes" - A multichannel audio-theatre-installation that was on display at Convent de San Agusti, Barcelona, in december 2009.

With choreographer Angela Lamprianidou he worked on various dance- and performance-pieces. Here we can hear excerpts from "Shortcuts" (2008), "Sit" (2010) and "Shortcuts Collagen" (2011). The plays have been performed at various theaters in Spain and Germany.

First time playing the Freedonia - a nice little theatre/bar/hangout in the deepest Raval. Dr Apfel reads and plays, first a stunning presentation of his Roadmap, then a couple of his lovely songs. Later ee play our set, and for the first time since years: We DJ! People dancing until the club closes. Whow, we had a good time!

Owen of the fantastic band Barcelona Bakalao is one of the organizers of the Music Hack Day Barcelona, and he invited us to play on that event. What a pity that we did not have time to participate in some of the workshops (especially the one about the rgb-arduinome, that's something we want to have!!!). But anyway, saturday night we rocked the campus. We played a stunning cover of Still loving you by the Scorpions, offered some meditation advice for the world and made a lot of noise. Uyuyuy.

Wonderful small festival out in the countryside, we played together with a whole set of friends: N'Sista, Arbo, Equipo, Ferando Lagreca, Frozen Radio, David Apfel - basically all the people that play a lot at the NIU. Tremendous full moon, a horse dancing to our horse song, swimming pool, a theremin-love-machine. Perfect!!!!! Hope to be there next year again!!!!

The video shows a moment of the afternoon right before the concerts started. Everyone was supposed to plant some sunflowers and the string duo played some Thelemann and Bach to chill in.

It must be like a year ago, or even more, that Hangar's Ignacio Somovila asked us to play on an event that he is planning. It would be a picnic in the new park of Poble Nou (pictured above). The picinic-event is part of an exposition called "Paradís perdut" that opened this week in the civic centre Can Felipa. Well tomorrow, sunday 2nd of may we will play 4 hours of ambien music, cumbiatronics, laptopdelica and friendly noise in the park. If it doesn't rain (and it doesn't look too good, ay).

During the last months we have been working on the score for another dance-piece by Angela Lamprianidou. It's called "SitZ" and the three dancers are dancing in a seated position most of the time. Lots of work for us, as the whole piece is like 500 hours long. We wrote several dozens of great poptunes, but the choreographer didn't like them and asked for abstract minimal electroacoustic noise. No problem for us, we filled several harddisks with screeches, blobs, mangle-dangled-opera and other obscenities. Tonight the whole thing will have a first stage test in the centro Civico de Barceloneta, and on the 9h of may it will get presented in the Mercat de les Flors (the biggest modern-dance-venue in Barcelona).

First live-concert with our artificial brain! We had developed it during summer, by using some science we found on the internet and some material we found at the chino and elsewhere. It's powered by a fruit-battery and it can speak. Most of the time it's hard to understand, but it works. Last friday our concert-as-proof-of-concept. We got invited to play the antic teatr, this beutiful underground-location in the heart of Barcelona. After an opening with Climnoizer (Berlin/Italy) playing a rubbergum-bassguitar and Carlas playing a mindblowing set on the reactable we started against all technical odds (equipment not working during soundcheck, the brain being unconfortable at this place, the audience talking about masturbation, etc.). And it rocked. The brain spoke to the audience. We played with our new launchpads. And then, suddenly David Apfel crawled on stage for a blasting performance of "Impossible".

This piece of music plus presentation of state-of-the-art-science-poetry never got performed so well. David waas wired, really (see it on the photo above). The audience did feel the pain. And suddenly everything worked together and the walls started to shake. Yes, so war das.
And in the end we sat down and everyone smiled.

12 & 13 of November: Rocking the schoolhouse

4 concerts in two days, for the youngest audience we had up until now: Institut FATIMA played for a school in San Agusti de Guadalix. We got invited to do some "conciertos didacticos" by the music-teacher of this school. They do concerts every year for the kids between 5 and 11 years, and after last years concert of middle-age-folk-music they wanted to offer something from the 21st century. So we adapted some of our songs, traduced them into spanish and made lyrics for the kids, and we invited our friend Marisol to come with us - as she is working as a clown for children theatre. It turned out very well. Very, very well. 200 kids shouting for an encore is a real kick! We had such a good experience that we really want to carry on doing shows for kids.

¿Cómo creen que será la técnica audiovisual en 10 años? ¿Qué instrumento o Software inventarían?
"Habrá más instrumentos que son capaces de componer e improvisar. Las máquinas aprenden a escuchar y entender. Y habrá interfaces que conecten directamente con el cerebro.
También habrá sistemas de sonido que harán posible que se oiga música en un lugar específico sin que se escuche algo alrededor, así que no molestas a los vecinos. Habrá pianos para zurdos. Guitarras para ciegos y trompetas para muertos. Pero nadie se va a interesar mas por la música, es un género del pasado. En el futuro todos van a mirar fútbol en 3D y comer patatas fritas con vitaminas."

Flussi was great!

Great days in Avellino, Italy (just found out that this is the town where Tony Soprano's family comes from). We showed our reacBall installation, up there on the photo you see Carsten explaining it to someone. We made friends with some very nice people that played there. Yagama and Karol from bulgaria, Andrea Sartori and Fabio Orsi from Berlin, Italy, Christian Kleine from Ableton/Main and many more. Hope to see you all again some day!! DJs contra la Fam invited us to play on this year's festival.Beautiful open air venue on the Gloreis Encants market. Unfortunately Carsten couldn't make it to the concert (he had a broken neck from a horrible car crash, but now he is better). Paul played the gig with some support from Apfel. On the photo you can see a levitation-experiment that took place during the concert.

Video of people playing with our installation on the Sonarmàtica-exhibition. Sorry for the bad quality of the sound, I shot this with my photocamera. Anyway, those guys had a good time rocking the ball, and they were able to make some gabber-techno with it that we didn't have in mind when we programmed the set up. It was nice to see how people used the system on the exhibition - some were quite clueless, but had fun trying. Others got really into it (maybe they had read the instructions?).

We are preparing our activities on the sonar 2009 festival. On thursday, 18th, we play a concert at 21 hs on the sonarkomplex-stage. On the exhibition (Sonarmàtica) we will display the reacBall, that short time ago also was featured in the CreateDigitalMusic-blog.
On friday 19th we will play a little set on national radio RNE3, at 18hs approximately. And on saturday, 20th, we will do a Cumbia set at the bikeshop "My beautiful parking" (to be confirmed). Lots of work, we will try our best.

In Walpurgisnacht (thursday 30th of april) we play a concierto at the opening festivities of the Gracia based Shop Que enfieste la pieza. They make T-shirts and other stuff there, and so we thought we use the occasion for a Seriografía-concert happening. Paul has won a sounddesign contest! The Selector Contest from Puremagnetik, a company that delivers samples, sounds and content for sequencers and samplers as Ableton Live, Reason or Kontakt. Paul made some interesting drum-racks for ableton with a couple of their samples and won the first prize!

You would like to learn how to convert your laptopcomputer into a musical robot that makes music with his eye? You want to shake your arms and the music goes wild? We will show you how!
Institut FATIMA is giving a free workshop next month in the Barcelona Civic Centre PuntMultimedia (where we just played, see post below). We are going to give a introduction into reacTIVision and OSCulator, two applications that we use to remotely control the sound and music during our shows. reacTIVision is the tracking engine of the famous reacTable, invented at the Barcelona University Pompeu Fabra. With Institut FATIMA we have explored some of the many possibilities to use that application. We used it for an interactive instllation we once showed at the Sonar Festival, we used it for some funny instruments we built ourselves (the reacBall for example), and we use it during concerts to trigger stuff.
OSCulator is a program written by french programmer and musician Camille Trouillard that allows to convert messages from all kinds of controllers into MIDI. It's a great tool when you want to use gamecontrollers as the WIImote to control your music. We found some clever ways to integrate it into an Ableton-Live-Set.
All of this will be presented, explained and demonstrated on 28th of march at the Puntmultimedia, in the middle of the beautiful little park beside the Sants-TRainstation. . And after the workshop there will be a gathering of brazilian DJs and VJs. If you want to come, check out all infos here and write a mail for inscription to puntmultimedia@puntmultimedia.org.

Sunday afternoon, rocking the afterhours in the PVC club. What a pity - this venue will not exist any longer. They were located in a backyard-warehouse behind the Fira Montjuic. A really nice spot, something that you don't see too often in Barcelona. We played a energy-laden tekno-set. Fantastic response from the audience. Thank you Annette for sending the two fotos below!

Wii-Osculator - a whole lot of shaking going on

Since a couple of moths we are using the wiimote a lot. This remote game-controller gives you for cheap three sensors for measuring acceleration-data in the three dimensions of space, that are submitted via bluetooth to our computers. There the data gets converted first into OSC and then into the midi-format. In the video above you can see one of the possible uses of all that.

All of this would not have been so easy to realize without OSCulator, a wonderful piece of software that allows to convert all kind of data inputs (gamepads, wiimotes, reacTIVision and many more) to midi or keystrokes. The developer Camille is a very kind and helpful person - we had contacted him once regarding some issues with reactivision and he updated his software for us immedeatly!
He opened a forum on his web now (http://www.osculator.net/bp/) - definetly worth checking out if you want to learn that stuff!!

Eschbazzio remixes

So we had made this song inspired by Semolina Matic. It's called "En mi Eschbazzio" and is about those places where people act with passion and power in arts and culture. Inspired by Semolina's powerful speech on the "Puto Encuentro" we improvised this song together. So we had this scetch of it on our laptops that we never finished, but one day we had the chance to record some voices for the chorus. After a couple of months we edited it, and got a half-backen final version of it. The other day we played it to some people at the NIU, and now Jordi aka Deep Fried or Dwight Fried or D-fright has made two very nice remixes, here they are:

We have some music up on soundcloud, a music-sharing website: soundcloud.com/institutfatima. Lately we did some conceptual stuff, as composing a tune without actually composing music, but setting up rules in the arpeggiator. we start with just one note that is holding, and give instructions to the computer to play patterns based on this note. Idea is to meet people who have attended our ableton-live-workshops and everybody else interested in producing with live, just to show some tricks, discuss issues and do some music. Come and play! Festa de Poble Nou, what a strange night. Because of the rain our concert got canceled, then again Josan who had invited us told us that we would play a little bit later, then it was too late already, and in the end we played. But in the meantime we went to a different party, saw the end of the fantastic Meneo-concert, then the rather strange Chicks on speed doing a noisy set with trigger-enabled-fashion and high-heel-string instruments. In the meantime phoning to our stage, we play, we don't play, canceling Marti who was at a different palce, then inviting him again. Lots of confusion. In the end we got to the our stage again and saw a electric Rumba band palying. After them we finally should do the concert. 2.30 in the morning. No time for setting up the machines, just throwing everything on the table and start to play. During the first two or three songs Marti was still setting up the videoprojection. And only a few people as audience, but nearly everybody danced! We played only the faster songs, and after 45 minutes it was over. Everybody smiled, a last drink and the night was done. Thank you to everyone who was there!

Salam, muy amigos. This is one of our announcements for the concert at the Slam&Klam festival
. Thanks to our friend Yunnez from BCN who recorded all the stuff with us.

On the road in Marokko

Our driver - Casablanca-Fès in 4 hours on the motorway.

The road was empty, the air full of smoke and the landscape a dessert under the nearly full moon. After falling asleep in the car we suddenly woke up at a restaurant for the meatbreak:

Meatbreak at midnight

Dozens of corpses hanging for the happy consumption. Many men eating, playing cards, not one drinks alcohol. We had an orange juice and listened to the beats of a party beneath.

Shopping in the Medina

Next day, fell out of bed, dragged a comb across my head. On our way to find a ball for the reacTIVision-controllerism-manoeuvres we crossed some great stores in the medina. We have to go back again tomorrow, lots of shops were closed. But we got the ball and some great smelling superglue to attach the fiducial-symbols to it. And we found a tooth-store, so next year tooth-to-midi?

At two o'clock we arrived for the soundcheck, but now at 6 they still have no electricity, so we are back in the hotel blogging ... more tomorrow after our concert.

2 magic concerts recorded in August 2008. The first one on 6.8.08 at the Caixaforum Barcelona in a great venue, the first time with our new "wiij" Marti Sanchez (www.minoviasoyyo.es), really great visuals, but the sound of the video did not record, what a pity, seems to be something esoteric or some kind of descontrol! The second concert was in the Caixaforum Madrid togehter with David Apfel (http://www.elclubdelosastronautas.com) who is a spaceship and there we had the best feedback from the audience so far. This time we recorded good sound, but the video was shot on a trashy photocamera. We mashed up the videos. Enjoy it!

Next stop Fès, Marocco! We will play at the Slam & Klam Festival. This year they celebrate the second edition of this festival that is dedicated to HipHop, poetry, electronic music and digital arts (at least that is what we have been told).
We will play a concert and as well give a workshop on our techniques for live sampling and controling our sequencers with Wiimotes and cameras. We are looking forward to get to know people from down there, getting to know new music and to learn about Klam - which is a kind of poetry and spoken word improvisation from Marrocco. If you happen to be in Marrocco come to see us on the 11th of September in Fès!!

21.08.2008 Madrid!

First time in Madrid! We played at the new Caixa-Forum, a museum on the Paseo de Prado, right in the middle of town. This time again with David Apfel, doing speech on "Impossible", dancing on "Muy chungo/Jabon Jabon" and giving a presentation on perspectives for a longer life by biotechnology and drugs. The audience was astonished. We made lots of fans apparently, more than sixty people signed up for our newsletter after the show!
We stayed in Madrid for the weekend, and have seen futuristic lifeforms by Theo Janssen and more incredible stuff at a digital arts exhibition at the Reina Sophia-museum, ate some broken eggs, had some tinto de verano, got to know the city etc.
Hope we will come back soon!

A huge stage in front of the museum Caixaforum, a beautiful summer night. We had one of our biggest and probably best concerts this year. This time again with Marti Sanchez who did some great visuals. This was the first time we played with a setlist and knew which songs we will play in which order. And it worked out fine. The audience was very nice, very mixed, as some originally came for a Flamenco concert in the Auditorium, but then stayed for our show as well.

On the 9th of may we played the CCCB - the same place were I have seen the most earshaking concerts of my live: Pan Sonic on Sonar a couple of years ago, and Sunn O)))) last year. We got invited to play together with Oval. Oval is Markus Popp who then again is a firend of firends of my youth in Darmstadt. And the other act on this night, part of the mp7 concert series, was Martin Kaltenbrunner with his reactable. An all german-speaking line up, hehe.
Martin started the night with a presentation of his buzzingsqueekingfeeping table-instrument. After this rather serious, academic part of the night Oval played. Markus Popp had brought two laptops and dropped abstract noises and beats. A camera would film from behind, and to our surprise there wasn't much magic going on - no custom software, no unseen tools, just him dropping samples and audiofiles, like a DJ. I for sure had expected something more sophisticated, as Oval is considered as inventors of the Glitch-genre. Maybe his art doesn't translate so well into live concerts.
After this the audience had the chance to play with the reactable while we would set up our eqipment on stage. We had Frank Rudow as a guest with his nord-lead-synthesizer, and David Apfel as guest who would present his latest discoveries about neuroscience and virtual worlds and show accompying slides. We played a couple of songs in between. The audience liked it (I believe), and to our own satisfaction we heard that Alexander Hacke from Einstürzende Neubauten was there and seemed to enjoy it as well.

Then there are two other groups that are also participating in the Santa Monica project. I need to learn more about "Internet 2" - they also do artistic projects under the name "Comte D'Urgell" and apparently once did a performance were they dressed as a wall, cutting streets in Gracia! 08/03/2008: Neuroscience and spaceships

This saturday we will play another concert at the NIU - but this time we invited David Apfel, the famous fantastic founder of El club de los Astronautas. He will give a presentation about how he will achieve space-travelling by the means of neuroscience. Heavy stuff, but definetely something everyone should know of. With David we already did lots of events and colaborations. He is the author of the lyrics of "Imposible" and "Muy Chungo" (listen to both songs on our myspace-page) and together with Paul he performed on various stages in spain with El Club de los Astronauts. This saturday he will start his presentation at 8:30 pm in our favourite gallery NIU, afterwards we will play new versions of all our songs related to Sci-Fi, Hi-fi and Low-fi, Brei-Fi and No-Fi.

Today we played a improvisation set with our long time friend Frank Rudow - who recently moved to Barcelona and is working here with his new project Suma. He had been invited to make music on a event organized by friends, and he invited us to play together with him. The event took place in a kind of greenhouse and we played ambient music for the invited guests between plants and a surreal exposition. Frank used stones, leaves, flowerpods and found objects for percussion, we played on two laptops, sampling his noises. On our drop-page you can listen to the last 11 minutes of the one and a half hour long improvised ambient set we played.

First attempt in creative abuse of creative commons. Our curator Oscar Abril Ascaso has published a serie of songs with his band OAA+SaLA (Oscar Abril Ascaso + Sedcontra avec Les Autres), all under a creative commons licence that allows to use the material for derivative work. "Ok, let's go!" we thought, and made a remix of one of their tracks. We used the liner-notes of the track "La perversion" from the band's website, translated them into german and put them over some spliced and diced samples from the original track. Selbstreferenz at it's best, as we have lyrics explaining that a sadist pervert would be someone who is putting himself into the place of the other, thus creating IMMANENZ. What else is a remix? We will play a little improvisation set at the Expopo - a one day exhibition of our artist friends webportal Guapopo . The location is a huge flat in the Eixample. The idea is to have people make the sound of the artpieces exhibited, and then use these soundbytes to compose little pieces of music. Hmmm, if that works?

We have been invited to take part in a projectin the museum Santa Monica: 14 bands will rehearse in a wooden box in the central hall of the museum during the next three months. The outcome will be published under creative commons licences. We will have two slots, tuesdays and thursdays from 4 until 6 in the afternoon - and you can come and visit us. We still don't know exactly how the whole process will be, but we are looking forward to make some Rampampam!
We will for sure record a lot and try to put as much stuff online as possible!

Institut FATIMA has been featured in the fotonovela-magazine BCN.urb, published by our beloved ayuntamiento (General Itat). We managed to fill in some last corrections into the text, so have a look at it and compare the german and the catalan texts.
